Lafayette Instrument Company February 15, 2007 Cohen, M. J., D. L. McArthur, et al. (1980). "Comparison of four biofeedback treatments for migraine headache: Psychological and headache variables." Psychosomatic Medicine 42(5): 463-480. 42 migraine headache patients (mean age 42 yrs) participated in an appraisal of biofeedback for differential finger warming--forehead cooling, frontalis EMG relaxation, alpha enhancement, and vasoconstriction of the temporal scalp arteries. Analyses revealed that all groups had a significant reduction in number of headaches per week with no change in intensity, disability, or length of headache. A nonspecific effect for biofeedback is suggested, with the likely candidates being a relaxation phenomenon or a cognitive explanation based on perceived control. Biofeedback: An Effective Add-on Treatment for Migraine Headache Alongside Medication Therapy

Background & Objective:  Migraine is an occasional headache that represents neurological and gastrointestinal symptoms, as well as changes in the autonomic nervous system. Biofeedback is a non-pharmacological technique used to treat migraine headaches and is proven to reduce headaches and improve performance. The present study aimed to compare the efficacy of biofeedback and pharmacological tr...

Biofeedback in headache: an overview of approaches and evidence.

Biofeedback-related approaches to headache therapy fall into two broad categories: general biofeedback techniques (often augmented by relaxation-based strategies) and methods linked more directly to the pathophysiology underlying headache. The use of general biofeedback-assisted relaxation techniques for headache has been evaluated extensively by expert panels and meta-analyses. Taken together,...

Biofeedback-assisted relaxation in migraine headache: relationship to cerebral blood flow velocity in the middle cerebral artery.

OBJECTIVE To determine if migraineurs with aura respond differently to biofeedback/relaxation than those without aura and, if so, whether the variability in outcome can be explained by blood flow velocity. Background.-The relationship between cerebral blood flow velocity and treatment response to biofeedback/relaxation in migraine with and without aura is uncertain. METHOD Twenty migraineurs ...

Biofeedback and rational-emotive therapy in the management of migraine headache.

Twenty-four migraine patients were randomly assigned to one of four conditions: (a) self-monitoring of headache activity (waiting list), (b) frontalis EMG biofeedback, (c) digit temperature biofeedback, and (d) digit temperature biofeedback plus Rational-Emotive Therapy (RET). Bidirectional control over the target physiological response was assessed through a reversal design in each session. Fo...

Effects of Visual Biofeedback Therapy on Postural Balance of Stroke Patients

Purpose: Postural balance deficit is one of the common post-stroke disabilities. Providing visual biofeedback while balance activities are performed is a way to improve postural balance disorders following stroke. But among the research published, there is incoherency about the positive effects of visual biofeedback therapy. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of usin...
